Independent Advocacy
Who needs an advocate?
Most older people are completely independent, and able to make informed choices for themselves. A lot of older people have family or friends who will support them as a matter of course, without realising that they are actually acting as advocates. However, there is a growing number of older people who do not have anyone to support them and these are the people that our Advocacy Service aims to help.
Our Advocacy volunteers provide a free, one-to-one, service across Neath Port Talbot, which encourages and enables older people to retain their independence and make informed choices for themselves.
Advocacy is about offering support for another person who is unable to represent his or her own interests. It’s about being treated equally, influencing decisions and getting better service.
An Advocate can help you deal with:
- Everyday domestic issues/problems
- Moving into residential, nursing or sheltered accommodation
- Discharge from hospital
- Obtaining services, statutory or other
- Making a complaint
- Regaining the confidence to deal with your own problems or major issues
