Getting Out and About
Getting out and about becomes more difficult as we get older. Many still drive their own car but most have stopped and now rely on public transport and transport schemes set up to help older people to be able to get to the shops or go out on trips with their friends.
Below are the main transport schemes in the area.
Dulais Valley Community Transport
Dulais Valley Community Transport is set up to cater for the transport needs of people with disabilities, voluntary and community groups who are in need of low cost transport, living within Neath Port Talbot Valley areas.
The Scheme provides:
- Group Hire Minibuses
- Dial-A-Ride
- Community Car Service
- Low Cost Door to Door Service 7 Days a Week and operate
- Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles
The Scheme usually only charges mileage incurred whilst you/the group are a passenger on local journeys.
Community Car Service
Unlike the minibus, the charge is per person, not per vehicle.
Regular scheduled journeys also offered such as shopping/market days/special events.

Neath & District Voluntary Transport
Provides transport for disabled and elderly passengers who are unable to travel by any other means. This service is available to residents living in Neath and Pontardawe. Volunteer drivers using their own cars will take passengers to luncheon clubs, Hospital visiting, on social visits or shopping trips.

Neath Port Talbot Community Transport
NPTCT is a non profitmaking organisation which provides affordable, accessible transport to voluntary and community groups in urban areas of Neath Port Talbot.
NPTCT has 8 wheelchair accessible minibuses that carry between 12-16 passengers.

Port Talbot Community Cars
Provides transport for disabled and elderly people in Port Talbot and the lower Afan Valley. PTCC have a team of volunteer drivers who use their own cars to pick up passengers at their homes and take them to luncheon clubs, to visit friends, dental appointments or just to the shops - any journey which they could not make in any other way. Two wheelchair accessible people carriers are also available for small groups and individuals.

Upper Afan (Community) Transport UAT has been set up for the people in the Afan Valley to carry passengers which other types of transport do not cater for. The scheme is administered by Dulais Valley Community Transport.
UAT currently has one wheelchair accessible minibus with twelve passenger seat, people carrier which has a tail lift and side step which makes it fully accessible to disabled passengers, and a Corsa car.
To hire the transport the registered group needs to be undertaking journeys concerned with education, religion, social welfare, recreation or any other activities of benefit to the community. Individuals can also book the people carrieror car on a dial-a-ride basis to take them to various of destinations.

Upper Amman Valley Community Car Scheme
Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, in partnership with local residents, Communities First and local Members administer a community car scheme for elderly and disabled residents of Cwmgors, Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, Tairgwaith and Lower Brynamman.
Volenteer drivers use their own cars to transport individuals to various destinations.

Ystalyfera Community Cars
This is based at the Ystalyfera Development Trust offices and has:
- Volunteer co-ordinators and Committee
- 2 cars which are owned by the scheme

Taxi Voucher Scheme
Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Service operates a pilot taxi voucher scheme, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
This scheme is for older people unable to use buses.

Bus Passes
Traveling by bus throughout Wales is made easier with an all Wales Concessionary Bus Pass.

Concessionary Bus Passes give elderly and disabled residents of the County Borough the opportunity for free bus travel on local services across the whole of Wales.
The scheme is financed by the Council and Welsh Assembly Government who pay the bus operators over £2,750,000 in return for the free fares which are given to 30,000 pass holders.
Applicants must complete an application form, available from Post Offices. Take the completed form along to the Post Office counter together with proof of eligibility, proof of address and one current passport-sized photograph (i.e. head & shoulders only).
If approved, the pass will then be sent to your postal address within 12 working days of the Post Office receiving your completed application form.
Please note that some applicants applying on disability grounds may need to obtain a Concessionary Travel Pass Application - Disabled Eligibility Assessment form from Social Services.
Passes are automatically be renewed after a number of years with a replacement pass sent directly to your postal address, so it is therefore essential to inform the Council of change of address or circumstances on 01639 686868.
